To this day, the Kurdish people are paying the consequences of the silence of the League of Nations

Nishtman Dialog

The inaction of the League of Nations and its possible consequences. The League of Nations, founded after World War I to promote peace and prevent conflict, faced challenges in effectively addressing issues such as the genocide of the Armenians, Kurds, and Greek community at the hands of Mustafa Kemal, the founder of the Turkish state, and other atrocities. The serial crimes against Kurdish civilians at the hands of successive Turkish military institutions may be a failure. Decisive action in those early cases may have emboldened later attackers.

In the case of Turkey, historical events such as the Armenian Genocide and the suppression of Kurdish uprisings in places like Dersim have had lasting effects on the region. Today, the actions of leaders like Erdogan in areas like Afrin continue to raise concerns about human rights violations and ethnic tensions.

Reflecting on the past can help us understand the present and work to prevent similar tragedies in the future. International human rights organizations, governments and individuals must remain vigilant in upholding human rights and promoting peace to prevent such atrocities from happening again.
